CHAPTER SEVEN

EVE SPENT THE next three days avoiding Damon. He’d walk into the bar of The Beachside and she’d walk out of it. He’d walk through the gardens and she’d walk out of them. Catching the slightest glimpse of him made her pulse pound and her body ache. It didn’t matter how much she tried telling herself that what had happened on the beach was an aberration. It hadn’t felt like an aberration—not then and not now. It had felt right. And that was a lie. She knew it was a lie.

Four years ago, he’d betrayed her. For two million dollars. How had she let herself forget that? How could she ever forget it?

She believed he felt bad for what he’d done, but it didn’t change the fact that he was the kind of man who put a price on love. She was never getting involved with a man like that again.

So why on earth had she let him touch her and kiss her so intimately?

Heat flamed in her face and she seized a cloth and wiped down the bar vigorously. What had happened on the beach on Saturday night had reminded her how good things had once been between them. But it had also brought back the devastation of his betrayal, her sense of loss—the sense that she’d never really known him when she’d thought that together they’d made more sense than anything she’d ever known.

She’d pinned all of her dreams and happiness on him—on them. Saturday night had brought back the unravelling of her sense of self in the days following his betrayal, the realisation that he’d played her for a fool and she’d been totally blind to it.

She closed her eyes, her hands clenching about the cloth. Yet on Saturday night she’d given herself to him wholeheartedly...recklessly...without a second thought. How could she have been so stupid, unguarded, forgetful?

Had she no pride?

Apparently not because when he’d stared at her as if she were the whole world a lump had lodged in her throat. It’d been so long. So long since she’d felt beautiful, desirable...like a woman. He’d kissed her as if she were his every dream come true.

And she’d been lost and so greedy for him, so hungry. That hunger still coursed through her now—and only increased whenever she saw him. Perhaps that was what frightened her most of all. Because she wasn’t dancing that particular dance with him ever again. She had to find the strength to resist him.

Dragging in a breath, she scowled as she watched his car drive away from The Beachside. She would find that strength.

Cassidy moved to stand beside her. ‘Evie, I know I probably shouldn’t say anything, should keep my mouth shut, but—’

‘Don’t say a word, Cassidy. Just...don’t.’ She didn’t even look at her friend as she said it, but from the corner of her eye she saw Cass raise her hands in a gesture of appeasement.

‘You’re the boss.’

Her chest clenched and she swung to her friend. ‘I didn’t mean it like that.
